I cannot find the origin of this pattern, but it seems like it's the one pattern that has transcended generations of knitters. Most knitters have made one of at some point, and they are loved by knitters and non-knitters alike. In fact, when I was still doing craft shows and markets, my dishcloth sets were my best seller.
They are one of my favourite quick knit projects and are a super affordable project, costing only about $1.50 per cloth. I use them all over the house for all sorts of cleaning projects. They also make a great gift for the eco-conscious friend on your list as they are machine washable, sturdy, and reusable. What's not to love!?

Approximately1/3 of a ball will make one cloth.
Gauge
Approximately 20 sts by 40 rows in 4 inches (10 cm) of garter stitch. Gauge is not super critical in this project.
Needles
4.0 mm /US 6 knitting needles (or size required to obtain approximately gauge).
Other Tools
Tapestry needle, scissors.
Finished Measurements
Approximately 7 inches by 7 inches (18 cm by 18 cm).
Abbreviations
B/O - bind off
C/O - cast on
k - knit
k2tog - knit two together
st/sts - stitch/stitches
yo - yarn over
Pattern Instructions
C/O 4 sts.
K one row.
Increase row: k2, yo, k to end(1 st increased).
Repeat the increase row until you have 44 sts (or until you reach the desired width) on your needles.
Decrease row: k1, k2tog, yo, k2tog, k to end (1 st decreased).
Repeat decrease row until you have 4 sts remaining.
B/O all sts.
Break yarn. Weave in ends.
There you have it! Simple, quick and practical. This a great project for knitting on the go or in front of the T.V.
I like to pair two together with matching colours to create a set, wrapped with coordinated ribbon or string, and gift them with a nice soap or as part of a home gift basket.
